Rotherham Speedway

Greyhound Stadium, Hellaby, Rotheram, South Yorkshire 1929-30

Paul Rickett says: There was a long-lost speedway track which ran in Rotherham from 1928-29, opened by White City star Skid Skinner, who lived a stone's throw from where it was at Hellaby, next to the current M18 Junction 1. Crowds hit the 15-20,000 mark and it was individual racing. Tommy Bateman had his first rides there.
The outline of the track is still visible. I remember going there in the 70s and the cinders were still there but it's now overgrown, although only the third bend has been chopped off by development.
I've included a pic from Google Earth, which shows the shape.
